It was sunny and a brisk 45 degrees when I left Eureka. I had Subway for breakfast and also brought a 6-inch turkey with me. I also had a frozen Amy’s black bean burrito stashed away along with the other stuff you see in the photo below:
Over the course of the day, I ate one Hammer bar, one Sweet and Salty, the burrito and the turkey sandwich. I supplemented with 2 ice cream treats, and 2 cokes. After checking in here, I had a burger and fries and a pepperoni pizza to go. That’s what you eat after burning 8,000 calories in the saddle. It’s still not enough.
I am really enjoying the freedom of not following the race rules anymore. Today, I took a detour because I’ve always wanted to visit Polebridge. So, I did and then took an alternate route which saved me 10 miles. (Later, a hotel fiasco would add 10 extra miles for today and 10 more for tomorrow!)
The road was pretty washboarded in spots and my rear end and saddlesores took the brunt of the abuse. Tomorrow should be a short day, so hopefully they can recover a bit.
Beyond that, we’ll see.
